Massage therapy: effective in spasms and muscle cramps Any runner at one point or another has had a varying degree of muscle spasm or cramp. Spasms are painful and uncontrollable right now. Sometimes they can take your breath away. Manual soft tissue therapy is an effective technique to relieve spasms and pain caused by them. Spasms DefinedSpasms Defined A spasm is an involuntary contraction of a muscle. There are two types of spasms. Tonic and conical spasms. Conical spasms are marked by alternating cycles of relaxation and contraction and tonic spasms are sustained periods of contraction. The cramps are strong, usually painful short spasms lived. Causes of SpasmsCauses of Spasms There are many reasons why people experience muscle spasms; the four most common causes are nutritional deficiencies, ischemia, muscle cramps associated with exercise and styling. To avoid spasm or relieve them it is important to know exactly what is causing spasm. Once known, address the causes before and after running. Nutritional deficiencies, such as magnesium and calcium, can make people prone to cramps, especially at feet. For common nutritional deficiencies in runners and how to correct them Nutritional deficienciesIschemia – occurs when a muscle suddenly or slowly looks at oxygen and can be caused by anything that restricts blood flow. Let's use a gastrocnemic muscle spasm or calf. A tight gastrocnemic muscle can restrict blood flow to the lower leg causing the lower leg muscles to work harder and use more an anaerobic environment (without oxygen). An anaerobic environment causes the products and fragments of lactic acid to accumulate in gastrocnemium and possibly in the surrounding muscles. As a reaction, gastrocnemium becomes even tighter, more overloaded and painful. Because gastrocnemium does not work on 100% spasms can occur. Until some type of intervention is introduced, the spasm/dolor cycle continues. Massage in ischemic conditions is extremely effective because massage can free the tight muscles that cause constriction and restore the proper flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscle. The Ischemia – Associated with Mercy Mercy – occurs towards the end of a hard exercise. Dehydration, heat and electrolyte imbalances can be a cause for this. Exercise-associated cramps can be relieved or even prevented with proper hydration, warmed and refreshed after vigorous exercises. Associated Exercise Muscle scratchesSplinting – is presented as a protection mechanism after injury in a specific area. Pain is a safe guard so no more damage will happen. Massage in this situation is not recommended. Once the spindle has been resolved, the massage is very effective to relieve tight muscles and increase blood and oxygen circulation to the injury area. SplintingWhy massage is so effective Why is massage so effectiveWhile a runner is in an active spasm, massage can damage the muscle. Instead, a technique called mutual inhibition is used. Using our example from above, if a runner is having a gastrocnemio spasm (gastroc), the therapist compresses the gastroc while activating the antagonist muscle, in this case tibialis previous. By activating the antagonistic muscle, the therapist turns off the gastroc that will help relax the spasm. A light stretch on gastrocnemium can be introduced as the spasm is subsidizing. Once the spasm has been relieved, a massage technique is used to break down the cramp area. Massage is also recommended a few days after a spasm to help keep muscles loose and increase blood flow to the area.
